‘Alcoholism’: a flawed concept?

One of my main areas of interest is how concepts of addiction influence our behaviours.  Issues such as confidence in our ability to change (or ‘self-efficacy) have been well established as important predictors in success. I’ve been particularly interested in how beliefs about what ‘a problem’ actually is affects individuals own thoughts and behaviours.

I’ve written about this in the Guardian in context of whether ‘alcoholism’ as a concept is holding us back from identifying drink problems and what role the media may have in driving this. I hope you may find it of use.
